Brothel
Before it became the pub we know today, the building was a busy brothel. That was in Georgian and Victorian times before the Three Graces were built on the Mersey, and the river straight past St Nick’s. If our walls could talk, you’d want to put your headphones in.

Dockers & Sailors
In the early days, the Pig was the go-to for dockers and sailors looking for a drink after long shifts by the river. The laughter and tall tales started back then and never stopped. Nowadays, there’s hardly any seamen left.

Facade
Our outside might be a bit rough round the edges – we’ve even had a sign saying “We’re not closed, just ugly”. We had a refurb in 2025 but there’s still plenty of character on the outside. Don’t let it fool you though – the warmth is on the inside.
FOOTBALL
We’re not a blue pub, and we’re not a red pub (landlord Bobby is a Wycombe Wanderers fan). As an iconic Scouse boozer we want everyone to feel welcome at the Pig. That said, we’re only a 15 minute walk from Hill Dickinson Stadium, so it’s an ideal stop off for match day pints. Come drink in the footsteps of Brian Labone, who was such a popular regular that he kept an office upstairs!
G
Georges
When the Pig first started selling delicious libations, Mad King George III was on the throne and George Washington was President of the United States. That’s over 230 years of social lubrication!
H
Hidden Tunnel (WW2)
Down in the basement there’s a mysterious hatch leading to concrete spiral stairs that stop about five feet down. It’s rumoured to have led to the Western Approaches complex over the road, and may well have been filled in when that was sealed off after the war.
I
India Buildings
Right across the way stand the grand India Buildings – a reminder that the Pig sits in the thick of Liverpool’s historic heart, where trade, tales and pints have always met. It now houses thousands of folks in the Civil Service, some of whom might occasionally enjoy one of our fine beverages.
J
Jukebox
Okay, we don’t have one. But there’s a laptop behind the bar that controls the music, so if it’s not too busy then we’re happy to take requests. No weird stuff though, keep it mainstream, John Peel.
K
Karaoke
Karaoke at the Pig is a thing of legend. The only rules? No Valerie, no Angels, no Barbie Girl, no 500 Miles – and strictly NO Wonderwall. Oh and no repeats. We once had to kick out an angry man for demanding Fairytale of New York just 20 minutes after someone else had sung it.
L
L2 & L3
We’re a pub in two postcodes – half city centre, half dockside. The journey from the bar to the ladies loos will take you across the boundary three times. Beat that ‘Spoons.
Live Music
Besides karaoke, we’re always happy to host a cosy little gig. See W for The Whistle.
M
Mural
In 2018, local artist Laura Marshall created a mural celebrating Liverpool’s cultural life – Beatles, cathedrals, ships, docks and animals all swirling together in a riot of colour and paint.

It’s where she used to drink.
Not a Brothel Since 1875
Our slogan. A nod to the building’s colourful past and our way of keeping history smiling. No, we’re not thinking about brining it back. Get yourself down Mathew Street and try your luck there.
O
Ornament Swap (Pig for a Pint)
Bring in a pig ornament (of at least 8cm), and we’ll swap it for a pint. That’s how we’ve ended up with our huge collection of pigs from visitors all over the world. Only one per person, don’t be greedy!
P
Paddy the Pig
Our most prized ornament. Paddy was introduced to the pub in the mid-90’s by landlord Tom Flanagan, and spent ten happy years here. When Tom moved away, Paddy moved to the Wirral to spend time with regular Len and his wife Heather. Sadly Len passed away a few years ago, and Heather decided it was time for Paddy to return home to the pub. He was brought back in 2024 after almost twenty years on the other side of the water.
Peephole
There’s a peephole in the men’s bathroom. What’s behind it? Well, that’s part of the mystery. Have a look through the next time you’re here.
Q
Quiz Night
The proper pen and paper pub quiz that any idiot can win. Three quizzes every Thursday starting from 7pm. You can join in any time, but you can only win once. If you’ve never heard the Cockney B##tard music round then you’ve never truly quizzed.
R
Real Ale & Racing Pigs
We’re big on proper pints – but we’ve also got a soft spot for the strange. If it’s a quiet day for sport, or if you ask nicely, we’ll pop on the Pig Racing. It’s like the Grand National, but a million times cuter.
S
SHELF OF SHAME
A lineup of spirits you probably shouldn’t order but secretly want to. Sours, Cactus Jacks, WKD – they’re all there, waiting for the brave (or the foolish). Cheap, cheerful, and disgustingly moreish.
SPORTS
T
T-SHIRTS (& MERCH)
Ask behind the bar for Pig & Whistle t-shirts and merch – wear them with pride (and maybe a pint in hand). Wearers get to enjoy 50p off a pint and a fiver of the sale goes to local good causes. Sorry, we don’t ship them, you’ll have to visit!
TREATS (DOG FRIENDLY)
We have treats for your four-legged friends! Dogs are welcome at the bar, but not on the seats. We love pups, but human comfort comes first.
THOMAS TITTLE
The first known licensee at the Pig & Whistle. Tom was the victualler (see below) operating at 12 Covent Garden back in 1790.

Victuallers
The earliest reference we’ve found to the sale of booze at our address is from 1790, in both Gore’s and Lewis’s directory of that year. The property was operating as a licensed victualler, where folks would come to stock up on provisions before they set sail – including delicious grog.
W
WHISTLE, THE
Upstairs, you’ll find The Whistle – our “secret” Sports Bar & Music Room. With Sky Sports and TNT, it’s the best spot in the house for match days, banter, and a few well-earned pints. We’re happy to pop on the commentary for almost any event. You’ll also find a couple of poorly tuned guitars if you fancy a good strum.
X
XMAS
We take the festivities seriously at the Pig. There’s no point having a cosy little quirky boozer if you’re not going to stuff it with baubles and fairy lights every year. The decorations start going up right after Halloween, but don’t worry, you won’t hear Mariah until well into December.
